How the estimates work

In the kitchen

How to make it.

  1. Heat the oven to 180°C, or 160°C fan. Line a roughly 20 cm square tin with baking paper. Chop the cherries.
  2. Gently melt butter, syrup and sugar in a saucepan, stirring. Remove from the heat.
  3. Mix in oats and cherries until evenly coated. Press firmly into the lined tin, including the corners.
  4. Bake for 20–22 minutes until the edges turn golden. The centre can still feel soft; it firms as it cools. Leave in the tin until fully cool.
  5. Melt the chocolate gently and drizzle or spread a thin layer over the top. Let it set, then cut the batch into 12 equal pieces.

Fit it around your training.

Why this combination?

Oats, syrup and cherries contribute carbohydrate. This is an enjoyable, energy-dense snack, not a replacement for a varied meal or a claim that chocolate improves recovery.

When it could work for you

A snack between meals or after a run when you want something sweet. Butter and fibre may feel heavy during running, so do not assume it works like a gel.

Plan food before, during & after your run

Storage & leftovers.

Keep in an airtight container in a cool place for up to three days, or freeze separated pieces for up to one month for quality. Cool completely before storing.
