2027 Run Rome The Marathon

Explore the course, understand your entry options and get ready for race day.

Rome combines a mostly level profile with historic streets and roughly six kilometres of cobblestones in the published description. The surface and turns deserve as much respect as the distance.

01 Know what you are taking on

What is the race like?

  • Road / paved route

The course, section by section

Open a section for the terrain and a practical pacing cue.

  1. Ancient Rome openingFori Imperiali, Piazza Venezia, Palatine.

City road opening with changes of direction.

How to approach it Keep the first landmarks separate from your first pace decisions. There is no benefit in chasing a fast group because the setting feels like a final sprint. Move predictably, settle your breathing and find space before checking whether your target effort feels right.

  2. Southern city sectionBasilica di San Paolo, Piramide Cestia.

Urban road section; exact surfaces follow the final map.

How to approach it Use this as the point to establish an ordinary fuelling routine. Carry the fuel you tested where you can reach it without stopping abruptly. Protect your stride when the surface changes instead of forcing every split to look identical.

  3. River and Vatican approachIsola Tiberina, Castel Sant’Angelo, St Peter’s.

River roads and a change into landmark streets.

How to approach it Let the views break the distance mentally while keeping your effort steady. If you want to acknowledge supporters or a photographer, do it without crossing another runner’s line. This is still marathon running, not a sightseeing pause followed by a sprint to catch up.

  4. Northern loopForo Italico, Ponte Milvio, Auditorium.

    Road-running loop and river crossings.

How to approach it Expect motivation to change as the surroundings change. Break the loop into short achievable tasks: relaxed shoulders, a familiar gel, the next clear section. Do not spend your final reserve simply because a bridge or turnaround feels like a decisive milestone.

  5. Central squares and Circo MassimoCentral squares, Bocca della Verità, Circo Massimo.

    Urban return and controlled finish.

How to approach it Keep your eyes on footing and official direction signs even when tired. Begin any final increase from the distance remaining, not the first famous square. The current finish is inside Circo Massimo; older Fori Imperiali finish advice should not shape your reunion plan.

02 Choose your approach

Find your race strategy.

Choose your goal. These are our pacing suggestions, based on the published course, rather than organiser instructions.

My first finish
  1. Start gently around the Fori Imperiali area.

  2. Break the course into the southern, river-side and northern sections while keeping your fuel routine.

  3. Save concentration for the later central streets and the actual finish approach.

A PB or time goal
  1. Keep the early effort controlled on unfamiliar paving.

  2. Use official kilometre markers to judge progress rather than forcing pace through every turn.

  3. Make a late increase only where you can keep a safe, stable line.

If the weather or your pace changes

Rome’s atmosphere and historic streets do not remove the need to respond to actual conditions. If it is wet, give yourself extra room at turns and on polished paving. If the race feels warmer than your training, soften the opening target before your breathing becomes laboured. Watch pace may become erratic among buildings; use sustained effort and official markers instead of repeated short accelerations. Follow any organiser weather instructions and use the medical team if you feel unwell rather than treating a fixed time goal as compulsory.

Turn your time goal into pace and splits

03 Know what is on the course

Drinks, fuel & toilets.

Station positions and products are not yet confirmed in the available information for this edition. Use the organiser’s final runner guide before deciding what you can collect on the course.

Toilet locations: a confirmed location list is not available here. Check the official course or runner map before race day; a drinks table does not automatically mean there is a toilet beside it.

Turn the station list into your plan

Mark the stops you expect to use and the fuel you will carry. If you use a gel that needs water, pair it with a published water point. Practise the products and cup or bottle format before race day; you do not have to try every item offered.

05 Make the day work together

Supporters & getting around.

Plan your support

Choose one public central or river-side viewing base. The landmark-rich route does not guarantee quick pedestrian crossings; use the final spectator and security plan before adding more sightings.

The places below are viewing ideas from the linked route or spectator guide. Use your edition’s access map for barriers, permitted crossings and any crew restrictions.

River-side course streets

Consider a publicly accessible pavement on the published route instead of relying on a crowded landmark entrance.

Circo Massimo surroundings

The 2027 finish is inside Circo Massimo. Confirm spectator entrances and arrange a reunion outside the runner exit.

Make the cheer easy to find

Agree a named point, the side of the road and your likely arrival window. Share your bib number for official tracking. Pick a separate reunion beyond the finish exit and a backup if the phone signal is poor.
