Long suburban running and lively neighbourhoods sit between the opening city section and the Oxford Road finish shown on the reference route. Plan two journeys: to the start and home from the finish.
01 Know what you are taking on
What is the race like?
The southern section and return
The Sale–Timperley–Altrincham part of the reference route is not the home straight. Keep eating and hold your intended effort so that Chorlton and the return to the city remain runnable.
The course, section by section
Open a section for the terrain and a practical pacing cue.
-
Opening contextOld Trafford · Inner-city roads
The published 2026 route is a reference while the 2027 route is confirmed.
How to approach it Give yourself several calm minutes to establish an effort before analysing the target. Moving a few places forward in a large field rarely justifies repeated accelerations. If the opening feels too easy, make that your intended outcome rather than a reason to speed up immediately.
-
City contextDeansgate area · Manchester centre
City turns on the published 2026 route.
How to approach it Use average effort and the official distance markers to keep perspective if GPS pace fluctuates. Look ahead through turns and avoid a sudden change of line when passing a supporter. Make the next smooth stretch your place to find rhythm again.
-
Southern contextSale · Timperley · Altrincham
Longer road sections shown on the 2026 map.
How to approach it Use quieter stretches to make your routine automatic: check posture, fuel and then return attention to the road. Do not speed up simply because the field has more space. A sustainable rhythm through the suburbs is more valuable than chasing an isolated fast split.
-
Return contextChorlton · Oxford Road finish
The 2026 route returns to the Oxford Road finish. Confirm the final 2027 streets.
How to approach it Divide the final effort into the next manageable landmark rather than the entire remaining distance. Recognising a neighbourhood does not prove that you can sprint home. Increase effort only when it feels repeatable, keeping enough attention for the last turns and the finish flow.
Official maps & course details
The following course details are from the edition shown. They help you understand the route while your edition’s final information is being prepared.
- Course
- The 2026 course includes Deansgate, Sale, Altrincham, Chorlton and Stretford, finishing on Oxford Road.2026
The linked 2026 route is a planning reference. The 2027 course and race-day arrangements may change.
02 Choose your approach
Find your race strategy.
Choose your goal. These are our pacing suggestions, based on the published course, rather than organiser instructions.
My first finish
-
Settle before trying to make up any seconds lost in the start field.
-
Use the southern neighbourhoods as small targets and follow your practised fuel schedule.
-
Break the return into the next marker, then reassess your effort as the city finish approaches.
A PB or time goal
-
Avoid repeated early overtakes or chasing instant GPS pace in the city.
-
Use official markers over several kilometres to assess the target.
-
Keep the suburban return controlled before making a late, deliberate increase.
If the weather or your pace changes
Do not let a sheltered urban opening dictate what you expect in a more open suburban section. If wind or warmth changes how the effort feels, adjust early and gradually rather than waiting for a dramatic fade. Use familiar kit that you have tested when damp as well as dry. In wet weather, take road markings and turns with attention, especially when the field compresses. Finish preparations matter too: put warm, dry clothing where the actual 2027 baggage process allows you to retrieve it.
03 Know what is on the course
Drinks, fuel & toilets.
2026 station information · Check the final 2027 guide for changes.
- Water and toilets
- Eight on-course water stations, each with participant toilets.
- On-course gels
- Selected HIGH5 gel points supplement your own fuel. Use the station table and route map for positions rather than assuming a gel at every water station.
Turn the station list into your plan
Mark the stops you expect to use and the fuel you will carry. If you use a gel that needs water, pair it with a published water point. Practise the products and cup or bottle format before race day; you do not have to try every item offered.
04 Before the start
Your race morning.
Times are local to the event. Work back from your own wave, allowing for the walk, toilets and bag drop.
Your allocated start-wave time is not listed here. Use your entry email and final runner instructions for the time and assembly deadline.

Plan your support
The organiser suggests Metrolink for multiple sightings. Choose a Sale/Altrincham cheer or a city/finish base, check service and walking access, and agree a reunion away from the Oxford Road finish crowd. Final 2027 routing takes priority.
The places below are viewing ideas from the linked route or spectator guide. Use your edition’s access map for barriers, permitted crossings and any crew restrictions.
