2027 Great South Run

Explore the course, understand your entry options and get ready for race day.

Ten miles through Portsmouth's naval landmarks and Southsea, ending along the coast. The mostly flat profile makes it attractive for a time goal, but the seafront needs a weather-aware plan.

The course, section by section

  1. Southsea openingSouthsea start area

    Predominantly flat city roads

How to approach it Begin at an effort you can hold for ten miles. Do not let the wide road and fresh legs turn the opening into a shorter race.

  2. Maritime landmarksSpinnaker Tower, Portsmouth Harbour and Historic Dockyard

    Urban roads and turns

How to approach it Enjoy the landmarks while keeping effort steady. Look ahead for turns and the flow of runners around you.

  3. Residential middlePortsmouth and Southsea neighbourhood streets

Roads with loops and longer stretches

How to approach it Use the middle for a breathing-and-posture check. Maintain your rhythm rather than racing every passing runner.

  4. Back to the coastD-Day Memorial and Canoe Lake

    Roads returning towards open seafront

How to approach it Assess conditions and what is left before accelerating. The coastal finish still deserves a little reserve.

  5. Esplanade finishEsplanade and Southsea Castle vicinity

    Exposed coastal road

How to approach it Judge effort if wind changes the pace. Hold a clear line and keep moving through the finish process before meeting supporters.

02 Choose your approach

Find your race strategy.

Choose your goal. These are our pacing suggestions, based on the published course, rather than organiser instructions.

My first finish
  1. Keep the Southsea opening comfortable.

  2. Enjoy the harbour and Historic Dockyard without surging with the crowds.

  3. Use the D-Day Memorial and Canoe Lake area as a reset before the last coastal stretch.

A PB or time goal
  1. Establish your ten-mile effort once the field opens.

  2. If the wind makes the coast harder, protect effort rather than forcing an early target split.

  3. Use the final marked distance to build your finish along the Esplanade.

If the weather or your pace changes

Wind can have a bigger effect on an open coastal road than the course's flat profile suggests. Do not assume its direction or strength; check the forecast and respond to what you actually feel. Maintain a sustainable effort into wind and let helpful sections improve pace naturally without overstriding. In wet weather, take turns and markings carefully. Pack for waiting before and after running, and adjust your target early if conditions make the full ten-mile effort harder than your training prediction.

A little race history

The Great South Run was first staged in 1990. Ten miles is about 16.1 km: a useful step between a 10K and a half marathon, with its own pacing demands.

05 Make the day work together

Supporters & getting around.

Plan your support

A Southsea base can simplify the start, later course and reunion. For the Historic Dockyard section, use the official spectator access guidance rather than assuming every waterfront entrance stays open.

The places below are viewing ideas from the linked route or spectator guide. Use your edition’s access map for barriers, permitted crossings and any crew restrictions.

Portsmouth city section

Use a publicly accessible street on the final map; access inside naval or dockyard premises should never be assumed.

Southsea seafront

A useful base for late support and a reunion, with clothing for exposed coastal conditions.

Make the cheer easy to find

Agree a named point, the side of the road and your likely arrival window. Share your bib number for official tracking. Pick a separate reunion beyond the finish exit and a backup if the phone signal is poor.
