Learn why The Runner’s Journal exists, how its running articles are researched and who is behind its training, nutrition and recovery guidance.
Running is simple. The advice surrounding it often is not.
The Runner’s Journal is an independent educational platform created to make running science easier to understand and more useful in everyday training.
We explore the questions runners genuinely ask: how to train effectively, what to eat before and during a run, how to recover, what changes across the menstrual cycle and whether the latest shoes, supplements and recovery methods are worth the attention.
Our aim is not to prescribe one perfect way to run. It is to explain the reasoning behind the advice so that you can make better-informed decisions about your own training.
What you will find here
The Runner’s Journal publishes practical, evidence-led articles covering:
- Running training, pacing and workout structure
- Sports nutrition, fuelling and hydration
- Recovery, fatigue, sleep and strength training
- Female health and its relationship with running
- Running shoes, equipment and technology
Every article is written to be useful to real runners—not only elite athletes or sports scientists. Technical ideas are translated into straightforward explanations, practical examples and appropriate limitations.
How our content is created
Articles are developed using a combination of scientific research, recognised professional guidance and practical running context.
Where an article makes a health, performance or nutrition claim, we aim to link to the original research or a reputable clinical or professional source. We also explain uncertainty when the evidence is limited, conflicting or based mainly on highly trained athletes.
You can read more about this process in our Editorial and Evidence Policy.
Independent running education
The Runner’s Journal is independently produced. Editorial decisions are based on whether a topic is useful, relevant and supported by credible evidence.
If the website later receives payment, products, affiliate commission or another commercial benefit connected with a piece of content, that relationship will be disclosed clearly on the relevant page. Commercial relationships will not guarantee positive coverage.
Who The Runner’s Journal is for
The journal is for runners who want to understand their training rather than simply follow instructions.
Whether you are preparing for your first 5K, building towards a marathon or trying to make sense of conflicting running advice, the goal is the same: clearer information and better questions.
Who is behind the journal?
The Runner’s Journal was founded and is edited by Charlotte Thom, a Level 3 qualified personal trainer with a nutrition qualification. Having completed half marathons and now training for both the London and Manchester Marathons in 2027, Charlotte combines professional fitness knowledge with the lived experience of working towards demanding endurance goals.
